Families hire Newborn Specialists to help recovering mothers just after childbirth. If you extensive experience in working with newborns, including multiples, this is a wonderfully fulfilling position.
Newborn Specialists may be hired for day or overnight work. You typically are hired to go into the home for a few weeks after a baby is born and help the parents with areas such as feeding (lactation issues, effective bottle use/types), nighttime feedings (being either exclusively “on-call” for the night-time, or getting up to help the mother if she is breastfeeding), light housekeeping, teaching bathing and other baby hygiene skills, etc. Families may ask Newborn Specialists to assist with additional services (helping with meals, laundry, errands). In essence, a Newborn Specialist is there to support the transition of the new family, though they are often offered long-term positions when a family realizes the tremendous benefits and convenience they provide.
